Highway Historic Marker for Admiral Raphael Semmes

This plaque was placed on the western side of the Admiral Raphael Semmes Bridge on Highway 98 in Mobile County. It contains words from Admiral Semmes’ address to his crew just before the CSS Alabama left the harbor of Cherbourg, France, in 1864.

The bridge spans the Tensaw River between Mobile and Baldwin Counties.

Located just to the South of this historic marker is the USS Alabama, our State’s most frequently visited tourist site.
